Fashion Revolution Day: Do You Know Where Your Clothes Were Made?

April 24th was Fashion Revolution Day, a day when the fashion community gathers to remember the 1,133 garment manufacturers who were killed, and the 2,500 who were injured, in Dhaka, Bangladesh when Rana Plaza, the building they were working in, collapsed. Cracks had appeared in the building the day before, but the workers were told that if they did not come to work on that day, they would not receive their attendance bonus for the month. The workers were paid barely enough to live on, and could not risk losing their attendance bonus, so instead many of them lost their lives. The clothing that was being made in that factory was for stores such as Benetton, Mango and Zara.

To celebrate Fashion Revolution Day, I attended a networking cocktail event hosted by London Ethnic, which is a British company who provides a platform for British designers who manufacture their clothing in Great Britain under sustainable and positive labor conditions. The event raised money for the families of the victims of the disaster. The event was a great chance to get out into the city, and I had a lot of fun taking pictures of the models while raising money for an important cause!

Fashion Revolution Day seeks to gather together people who love fashion and encourages them to ask "Who Made My Clothes?"The hope is that by asking that question, it will bring awareness to the difficult lives many garment workers lead and encourage companies to do everything they can to improve these workers' lives.

Fashion Obsession: The Wrap Dress

The wrap dress has been a classic and iconic style for decades. Diane Von Furstenburg has been credited with 'inventing' it in 1972, although earlier versions of the wrap dress can be seen in 1930's and 40's collections as well. The style grew in popularity throughout the 70's as a symbol of women's liberation, and continues to be popular today. The flattering cut of the wrap dress highlights a woman's curves and hugs the body in all the right places. This dress can also be a great style for the office, and an easy one piece look you can throw on in the morning. Below are some of my favorite wrap dresses this season, in a variety of fabrics and styles.

1. The Polka Dot Wrap Dress

Eliza J Polka Dot Jersey Faux Wrap Dress

This charming jersey dress has personality, and a vintage feel. The flattering faux wrap style and mock collar keeps this dress professional and perfect for the office.

3. The Little Black Wrap Dress

Diane von Furstenberg 'New Jeanne Two' Wrap Dress

A classic black wrap dress is a must-have for every professional woman. This will be your go-to look when you do not have time to think through your morning outfit. Perfect to pair with elegant jewelry and a colorful tote.

4. The Colorful Wrap Dress

Although the wrap dress is a classic style, this does not mean it has to be boring. A colorful print is a great way to liven up the wrap dress and transition from winter to spring. I love this Lilly Pulitzer wrap dress with a bright pattern and true wrap style.

2. The Printed Wrap Dress

FELICITY & COCO Print Jersey Dress

I love a print for the office that has neutral tones to keep it professional. This grey wrap dress with a hint of blue has flattering three quarter length sleeves and a soft, comfortable fabric.

5. The Full Skirt Wrap Dress

Piece & Co and Diane von Furstenberg 'Jadrian' Cotton Wrap Dress

Take your wrap dress style up a notch with an full skirt. This dress is slightly more formal and fun with a pleated skirt that really makes a statement. The fabric is also 100% cotton, making it cool and comfortable for spring.

If you do not have a wrap dress in your closet, definitely add it to your wish list. This style flatters almost everyone, and there are so many fabrics and styles to choose from. Leave your comments for Polished Pinstripes below!

4. The Lace-Up Sandal

The lace-up sandal is a stunning style for spring and seamlessly pairs menswear with the timeless stiletto sandal. Love the classic black with cutouts from Sarah Jessica Parker's line.

Spring Recipes: Good Friday Mustard-Roasted Fish

It is customary on Good Friday not to eat meat, so instead take the opportunity to try a new fish recipe for dinner tonight. This mustard-roasted fish by the Barefoot Contessa uses two types of mustard to create an incredible sauce that gives flavor to even the simplest fish. I love making this recipe with red snapper but you could use any white fish you have.

This recipe is from Food Network Star: The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten and serves 4.

Mustard-Roasted Fish Recipe

Barefoot Contessa - Mustard Roasted Fish

4 (8 ounce) Fish Fillets
Salt and Pepper
8 Ounces Creme Fraiche or Heavy Cream
3 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard
1 Tablespoon Whole Grain Mustard
2 Tablespoons Minced Shallots
2 Tablespoons Drained Capers

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Place fish fillets in baking dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Next, combine the creme fraiche, both types of mustard, shallots, capers, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Spoon the mixture onto the fish fillets and spread evenly over all 4. Bake fish for 10-15 minutes until it's barely done. Serve hot and enjoy!

Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think! Leave comments and questions for Polished Pinstripes below.
