Tips and Trends: Running Late? 5 Makeup Essentials for a Polished Work Look

Office Makeup

You know it's going to be one of those mornings when you roll over in bed and grab your phone, only to realize that you have slept through all of your alarms and you have a client phone call in 45 minutes. It's all you can do to throw cold water on your face and toss on a basic black dress - you don't have any time to waste with complicated makeup as well. Here are my 5 makeup essentials that are super easy to use, will get you out the door FAST (you can even put them on in the subway) and will leave you looking polished and professional!!!

1. Easy-to-Use Foundation
The secret to glowing, polished skin in the morning is to find a foundation (or foundation-like product) that you can easily slap on as you are running out the door. I love Tarte's Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation because it sweeps on easily and blends into my skin quickly. If you don't want to use a powder, other options would be a BB Cream or a tinted moisturizer. Just stay away from the thicker foundations that require using a primer and a powder on top in order to lock in the makeup and look right - you don't have time for more than one product this morning.

2. Blush
Blush is an ABSOLUTE MUST, because nothing else makes you look as awake and alert. Pick an easy-to-use formulation in a color that is always flattering and sweep it in a flat U-shape, from the apples of your cheeks, then down and then back up towards your hairline.

3. Eyebrow Pencil
Polished eyebrows pull your whole look together and are one thing you DEFINITELY should take a few minutes to do. The Anastasia Brow Wizz pencil is an amazing tool for getting them done quickly and neatly (especially if you're doing them in the office bathroom). Do a few light strokes of the pencil end across your brows (make sure you've purchased the correct color for your eyebrows), then blend it in quickly with the brush at the other end of the Wizz. Voila - perfect brows!!
4. Eyeshadow
When you are running out the door, forget about eyeliner and mascara - they require a steady hand and a calm demeanor and aren't something you can put on easily while standing in the bus or subway (at least I can't!). Much better to opt for a basic nude eyeshadow palette that you can throw in your purse on your way out the door and easily apply even if you are squeezed up again someone's blue wool suit coat. You can also just put it on quickly in the bathroom mirror when you get into work. Flip open the palette and pick three colors - a light, medium and dark. Blend the light shade across your entire lid and across the entire eye socket, up to the brow bone (but don't blend it all the way up to the eyebrow). Blend the medium shade across the eyelid, and then blend the darker shade into the crease. You're done!

5. Tinted Lip Balm
This is the easiest step of all - just pull it out of your bag and pop it on! I recommend a tinted lip balm instead of a gloss, however, because sometimes glosses can be too shiny for the office. When you are running late, however, you probably don't have time to deal with a full-on lipstick (plus lip liner, plus checking your teeth to make sure it didn't smudge...). Tinted lip balm adds a touch of color with no mess, no stress and almost no effort!
